Sujoy Ghosh deftly builds the character of the mother, Vidya Sinha only in ten minutes typically skims over her personal and professional life (intertwined with some old Bengali songs) and rather concentrates on her very basic character traits by showing her apprehensions, insecurities, worries and possessiveness for her daughter which is definitely commendable. The film fades in with the quick glimpse of the banks of shimmering Hugli and then it all blacks out to Chandan Nagar, where the woman protagonist Vidya Sinha, who writes daily diaries, lives with her paralysed yet happy child Minie Sinha, on whom she endearingly dotes and also works very hard at a certain company named Khemka & Associates and saves an extra bit, so that she can take Minie to United States of America for her treatment.
